Since 1951, the Quebec Intellectual Disability Society (formerly known as the Association du Québec pour l’intégration sociale) has accomplished a colossal amount of work to support intellectually disabled people and their families. The goal of gaining recognition as full and equal citizens for these people has seen significant progress over the decades. Although there’s still a lot of work to do, the Society can take pride in the many significant accomplishments it has made.
Intellectual disability is still misunderstood. It is often associated with mental disorders. Intellectual disability is NOT a disease. It’s a fact of life for people who experience it – a permanent condition. These people can lead an inclusive and self-reliant life.
A lot of work still needs to be done to make intellectual disability an ongoing concern for political parties and Quebec’s health and social services system. Needs are great and resources are more than limited. By donating to the cause, either by a monetary contribution or a donation of used clothing and items, you will make a concrete contribution to the well-being of the intellectually disabled and their families.
